The
Pound - Cookham
To the west of the village, following the High Street towards
Cookham Rise. From Marlow take a left on Old Quarry Road south
of the river, on Dean Lane following the B4447 towards Cookham.
The Pound - so called since it bordered
the Pound Field where all the stray animals were penned; a
part of Cookham first inhabited by the Ancient Britons. Cookham
is a beautiful Berkshire village lying on the River Thames between
Marlow and Maidenhead. Kenneth
Grahame wrote his famous "Wind in the Willows" nearby and notable
British artist Sir
Stanley Spencer produced a number of paintings that were set around the
village.
If you are not visiting by car, The Old Swan Uppers is within
walking distance of the
station at Cookham Rise on the Marlow to Maidenhead line. Links to London
Paddington run daily. See First
Great Western Link for more detail.
Cookham Village
is a true picture post card area, with many houses dating
back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
